Community is at the core of CrossFit, and support is at the core of community. Without support, community is non-existent, and thus CrossFit as a whole suffers. Take a step back and imagine CrossFit without community; it would just be a bunch of exercising with no meaningful relationships involved. Then what is the point? Who do we suffer, celebrate, and grow with? These are things that most of us overlook on a day-to-day basis, but every day at Reignited Fitness we are engulfed in community while having the opportunity to embrace the importance of support. Reignited Fitness is structured to increase the quality of people’s lives through fitness, but there are a significant number of little things that go into making this happen.
Support is displayed time after time in the gym itself. Athletes that have yet to finish their workout are encouraged by others who stay behind after they have finished just to provide moral and verbal support. The importance of social support is that it provides motivation. We would never reach the level of effort and performance that we do if this social facilitation that we thrive off of were not present. In addition, this support even affects us physiologically, changing the hormones in our bodies. Research at Oxford University found that training in a group resulted in a greater release of endorphins than when training alone, even when the same amount of work was done. Again, this is only inside of the gym concerning physical performance. However, as a community we have an opportunity to expand our relationships outside of the gym and positively affect one another not only physiologically, but emotionally as well – creating growth in all aspects of our lives for each other.
Being supportive for someone else means being there for them and looking out for their best interests; not just every once in awhile, but all the time. In addition, telling them not what they want to hear, but what they need to hear – because if you don’t tell them, then who will? This consists of putting an effort into the practice of balancing praise and relentlessness for that person. Giving them feedback, holding them accountable, and making them feel important. Successfully implementing these aspects into the support system you provide for another will undoubtedly add quality to their lives, and thus adding quality to your life as well.
A lot of the time we are unaware of the substantial impact that we have on those around us; we are role models and we don’t even know it. This is why it’s critical that we hold ourselves to a standard for the character that we possess and portray. Every day we have the opportunity to aid somebody in their journey. The little things that we say and do accumulate over time to be an excelsior in helping others either subvert from or reach their goals; we should be striving for the latter. This is why community – and the support within that community – are so important. So next time you enter the gym, or somebody’s life – make sure you leave it better than you found it; this way everybody wins.
