Why do you CrossFit?

I was really struggling to make workouts a priority.  I couldn’t find anyone to work out with consistently, and once I broke a sweat it was too easy to just leave.   I needed to surround myself with like-minded people and I needed to be pushed.   I decided to give CF a try because of the coaching, competition and community of support.  I started out at a ‘beginners’ box, and am so glad I’m now at Reignited.  I am able to really challenge myself and have seen a huge improvement in my skills and endurance level.

 

What do you do for a living?

I’m a software engineer.     I solve problems by doing precision guesswork based on unreliable data provided by those of questionable knowledge.  See also… Wizard, Magician

 

When you are not in the gym, what is your favorite thing to do?

I enjoy anything outdoors and am usually working in my yard on the weekends.  I love spending time hanging out with my family, and volunteering to help those less fortunate through my church.  I also enjoy building and fixing anything with electronics or a gas motor.  My wife calls it tinkering.

 

Name one thing most people don’t know about you.

I was diagnosed with stage 4 Lymphoma at age 31 and was told at one point that I had around a 5% chance of surviving.  Shortly after, I sunk into a very deep depression and began self-medicating by drinking myself into oblivion.  By God’s grace I am now 9 years cancer-free and completely sober.   I got married in 2012 and am blessed to be a Dad to my awesome 12 and 16 year old step-daughters.

 

What is your favorite CrossFit workout? 

I love squats and any wod that is short and requires heavy lifting… preferably without running!

 

What is your favorite cheat meal?

My favorite ‘cheats’ would be bacon cheeseburgers, pizza and mexican food.   I am a also a sucker for huge bowls of popcorn and multiple ice cream sandwiches.   I take great Advocare supplements and my wife is a talented cook, so I am fortunate to eat sensibly most of the time and feed my body the good fuels it needs to perform.

 

What is your next fitness goal? 

I wish I didn’t loathe running so much, but really need to work on my upper body ‘pulling’ skills.  Currently, I am working on stringing together multiple sets of toes-to-bar and pull-ups!

 

If you were arrested with no explanation, what would your friends and family assume you had done?

I would say Piracy.   Not the Jack Sparrow Carribean type, but the nerdy Software or Electronic Media type.

 

If someone asked to be your apprentice and learn all that you know, what would you teach them?

Some life lessons I wish I had learned earlier, like how to let go of resentments and make amends every chance you get.  Life is too short to live in anger or fear and it’s never too late to start fresh.   Forgive others and serve your community… a kind word or helping hand can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
